What’s Your Niche?
Being a Virtual Assistant, it is impossible to be everything to every client and having a niche gives you somewhat of an upper hand. Some people have numerous niches. Once you have mastered one, why not purse another, right!
Quite often when we are starting out we find ourselves taking on work that is not ideal or did not turn out the way we planned. Do not be discouraged by this! It is part of the learning curve and provides you with an opportunity, to not only gain experience, but also clarity on what it is you want to really do and do not want to do. That is not to say you take any and every job that comes your way but be open to stretching and experimenting with the “right fit”.
I remember when I first started in this business that I would take any client I could get. I ended up doing lots of things I didn’t want to do for people I didn’t want to work with. It felt like being back in the corporate world. Once it became clear on who my ideal clients were, I found and attracted them into my business and was able to construct the ideal business suited for me.
So, what is your niche? Do you know what industry you would be happy working in? Do you know what field of that industry you would feel happy working in? What types of clients are going to match the service you will be providing? What type of qualities do you want to consider? These are things for you to think about!
There are several things to look at when determining your ideal client and the first place to start is with you. First of all take a look at what you are passionate about. What do you really enjoy doing? Consider your background and previous experiences. There is no magic answer to all these questions, however, based on the work you have done so far, try to match the profile of your ideal client to a profession or industry.
Some will know this right away, for others, you have to do some research and gain additional clarity through trial and error.
Once again you need to determine what is important to you. Remember you are creating this business and you get to make it into exactly what you want. Only by knowing what’s important to you, will you then be able to match that to future clients or a profession.
